Alingsås, the Swedish "potato town" (Potato Festival, annually in June), lies on the north side of Lake Mjörn. The town received its municipal charter in 1619. An industrial center (weaving, etc.) and the seat of law courts, it acquired a considerable reputation when Jonas Alströmer and Christoffer Polhem established a textile mill in the town.

Alingsås has preserved its small-town charm. It is famed for its attractive timber houses and its numerous inviting cafes (29 as of 2008) and cake-shops. In the market square can be seen a bust of Jonas Alströmer (1685-1761). Here too are the old Arsenal (1631), now a museum, and the Storken craft center, with a potter's workshop, a weaving room, a carpenter's shop, a knitwear workshop and a cafe. In the park of Nolhaga Castle Alstrømer grew potatoes and tobacco for the first time in Sweden.
