The Åland Islands (Finnish Ahvenanmaa) lie between Finland and Sweden at the south end of the Gulf of Bothnia, separating it from the Baltic. To the west of the islands, extending between them and Sweden, is the Åland Sea, some 40km/25mi across; to the east is the arm of the sea known as Skiftet. The group consists of no fewer than 6,554 islands and stacks, only 80 of which are inhabited.
