The town of Almagordo ("fat cottonwood") is located in the Tularosa Basin, surrounded by the Sacramento, San Andres and Organ mountains. Visitors to Almagordo will find Kid's Kingdom, Alameda Park, and nearby White Sands National Monument. It has a population of about 30,000 and gets more than 350 days of sunshine each year.
Alameda Park Zoo in Almagordo was established in 1898, making it the oldest zoo in the southwest. The zoo is home to about 300 animals of 90 different species that span 7 acres of natural habitat.

Eagle Ranch Pistachio Groves is a family farm open for tours. The farm began in 1974 when the Schweers acquired 400, two-year-old pistachio trees. Today there are 12,000 trees on 85 acres.
The Toy Train Depot in Alamogordo is almost a century old, with over 1200 feet of model railroad track, along with hundreds of model and toy trains on display.
The Tularosa Basin Historical Society Museum in Alamogordo has exhibits on the history of the Southwest including photographs from the the late 1800s to mid-1900's. The most unique exhibits is the unique exhibits is a 47 Star, US Flag. It is located next to the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce.
White Sands National Monument, southwest of Alamogordo, is a place of striking natural beauty. The sand dunes that stretch on seemingly endlessly are white gypsum sand.
Holloman Air Force Base near Alamogordo is said to be the scene of the incident on which the film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" was based. It is the home of the Stealth Fighter and a training ground for German pilots learning to fly the F-4 Phantom.

The National Solar Observatory / Sacramento Peak is located in the Sacramento Mountains south of Cloudcroft on Highway 6563, is used by scientists to study the sun. The facility has one of the world's largest solar telescopes, and is open for self-guided tours from dawn to dusk.
Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is named for rancher and state legislator Oliver Milton Lee. There are over 50 campsites, a visitor center with historical exhibits, and a restored ranch house.
