Toronto - Kensington Market

Kensington Market is situated in a district peopled at one time by newly arrived Jewish and other European immigrants, the latter mainly from southern Europe and the Balkans. Later they were joined by members of Toronto's Portuguese community and today the area between Spadina Ave. and Augusta St. is home to immigrants and "tourists" from every corner of the globe. From the very beginning this formerly residential suburb seems to have evolved a lifestyle of its own, with a motley selection of colorful little shops, flower stands, pleasant bars, cafés and snack bars. During the year the Asian community holds a number of lively celebrations.
The market itself, some of whose traders seem to deal in a highly exotic assortment of wares, is open Mon.-Sat.
