Toronto - High Park

Colborne Lodge was built in 1837 and was the home of the original owners of High Park, John G. Howard and his wife, Jemima. Howard was one of the city planners of Toronto. The house, a rare Regency picturesque building, still contains a variety of items which belonged to Howard. They chose the name High Park because of its height, and the commanding view over Humber Bay in Lake Ontario. The grounds also include 19th-century recreated gardens, a Coach House and the Howards' Tomb.

The 165-acre country property was deeded to the City of Toronto in 1873 by the Howards. This deed included the fact that the park was to remain 'for the free use, benefit and enjoyment of the citizens of Toronto and it be called High Park'.

Annually the Canadian Stage Company puts on a performance at the open-air theatre in Toronto's High Park during the months of July and August.
