Todi - Tempio di San Fortunato

South of the Piazza del Popolo, in the Piazza della Repubblica, is the fine Gothic church, the Tempio di San Fortunato (13th-14th century), approached by a flight of steps with a landing half way up. The facade (unfinished) has a beautiful central doorway (c. 1320). In the fourth chapel on the right is a fresco of the Madonna by Masolino da Panicale (1432) and there are also some beautiful choir-stalls. In the crypt (on the left) is the tomb of the monk Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), supposed author of the solemn Passion hymn "Stabat Mater dolorosa". To the west of the church lies the picturesque oldest part of the town, above which, to the west, are the ruins of the old Rocca, from where there is a fine view of the pilgrimage church of Santa Maria della Consolazione.
