Like Sausalito, Tiburon (pop. 6,685), meaning "shark", situated on a peninsula of the same name, still retains many features recalling its origins as a fishing village.
The wooden houses on Main Street, Tiburon's principal thoroughfare, are today occupied by smart shops - boutiques, antique shops and galleries; there are also excellent fish
restaurants. The narrow up-and-down streets lead to the modern part of the town and the villas of its mostly well-to-do inhabitants.
Tiburon is again like Sausalito in seeming much further removed from San Francisco than its 15.5mi/25km would suggest (the ferry crossing is even shorter, only half that distance). It remains in fact a different world.
