Description
On the site of the old imperial stronghold of Burg Kyffhausen, situated on the Kyffhäuserburgberg at an altitude of 457 m/1,499ft, stands a huge monument in honor of Barbarossa, 81 m/266ft high, erected between 1890 and 1896. The architect was Bruno Schmitz, who was also responsible for the "Battle of the Nations" monument at Leipzig. From the monument there are extensive views over the Kyffhäuser range and the Goldene Aue, extending northward to the Harz and southward to the Thuringian basin.

Visitors can also see the excavated remains of Burg Kyffhausen, with the castle well (176 m/577ft deep), and a museum.
