Barbarossa Cave

(Local Name: Barbarossahöhle) In the southern part of the Kyffhäuser range, near Rottleben, can be found the Barbarossahöhle, a gypsum cave with huge underground chambers and lakes which is associated with the Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa ("Redbeard"). Legend has it that the Emperor lies asleep here in an underground palace and that some day he will return and bring better times.
