The cantonal capital of Thurgau is Frauenfeld (414 m/1,359ft; pop. 19,000, situated on the river Murg just south of its junction with the Thur. In the upper town, rebuilt to a rectangular plan after a fire in the 18th C., stands the castle high above the Murg. It was once the seat of the Confederate landvögte (governors) and has a massive 12th C. tower, from which there is a fine view.

Must-see attractions nearby:
The tower was built by the Kyburgs of Findlingen in about 1227. Additions to the fortress were made at intervals. The castle now houses the Thurgau Cantonal Museum which has a rich collection of exhibits ranging from Neolithic times to the Early Middle Ages. Of particular interest are the furnished rooms of town and country dwellers (17th-19th C.), the exhibition illustrating the history of the town and a comprehensive collection of religious art, especially of the 14th C.
