The cantonal capital of Thurgau is Frauenfeld (414 m/1,359ft; pop. 19,000, situated on the river Murg just south of its junction with the Thur. In the upper town, rebuilt to a rectangular plan after a fire in the 18th C., stands the castle high above the Murg. It was once the seat of the Confederate landvögte (governors) and has a massive 12th C. tower, from which there is a fine view. The tower was built by the Kyburgs of Findlingen in about 1227. Additions to the fortress were made at intervals. The castle now houses the Thurgau Cantonal Museum which has a rich collection of exhibits ranging from Neolithic times to the Early Middle Ages. Of particular interest are the furnished rooms of town and country dwellers (17th-19th C.), the exhibition illustrating the history of the town and a comprehensive collection of religious art, especially of the 14th C.
