Uttaradit, about 450 km (280 mi.) north of Bangkok in the wide valley of the Menam Nan was rebuilt following the fire in 1967 that almost completely destroyed the old town. Since a huge reservoir was constructed 45 km (28 mi.) to the north-east of the town, the Pa Som barrage (also called the Sirikit dam after the queen), the economy of Uttaradit has flourished particularly owing to agriculture.
By car: from Phitsanulok highways 12/11/1045 (130 km (81 mi.)). From Sukhothai Highway 101 to Si Satchanalai then 102 (105 km (65 mi.)).
By rail: station on the Bangkok-Chiang Mai line (from Bangkok- Hualampong, 485 km (301 mi.), duration about 8 hours).

Governor Dat Nak Monument
A monument in front of the provincial administration building commemorates Governor Phraya Pichai Dat Nak, who repulsed an attack by the Burmese army in 1772.
Wat Tha Thanon
The Chinese style Wat Tha Thanon houses the statue of a Chiang-Saen style seated Buddha.

Sirikit Dam and Reservoir
The Sirikit Dam is the largest one in Thailand. The reservoir created by the dam covers 220 sq. km.
Wat Phra Boromathat
The Wat Phra Boromathat 5 km (3 mi.) out of the town (on Highway 102) is worth visiting. It has Laotian features and ornate carving on the projecting portals of the wiharn, wall paintings from the Ayutthaya period, and a group of fine chedis from the Sukhothai period.
Wat Phra Fang
16 km (10 mi.) south of Uttaradit situated on the left bank of the Menam Nan is the beautiful Wat Phra Fang from the Sukhothai period.
Wat Phra Tan Sila Aat
Not far from Wat Phra Boromathat is the Wat Phra Tan Sila Aat with one stone and four bronze Buddha footprints; there are also several beautiful figures of Buddha in Sukhothai style. Next to it is an attractive Chinese temple with splendid teak timberwork.
Wat Phra Yeun Phra Bat Yukon
Near by Wat Phra Tan Sila Aat there is another interesting temple, the Wat Phra Yeun Phra Bat Yukon with a charming mondhop and bronze Buddha statues in Sukhothai style.
