Sakhon Nakhon Attractions

Sakhon Nakhon

From Sakhon Nakhon, a quiet almost sleepy town in the far north-east of Thailand (about 650 km (403 mi.) from Bangkok) a lowland plain, well irrigated by Lake Nong Han, stretches to the Mekong; it is bordered in the south-west by densely wooded upland. Not many tourists venture here, only those who are interested in the rare but well preserved examples of Khmer art.

By car: from Khon Kaen highways 209/213 (175 km (108 mi.)). From Udon Thani Highway 22 (150 km (93 mi.)).

By bus: from Bangkok Northern Terminal.
Lake Nong Han
The northern edge of the town borders on Lake Nong Han, the largest inland lake in Thailand, with a small port and well supplied with fish. Close to the west bank is the decaying Khmer temple That Dum.
Wat Phra Cheung Chum
The new white prang of the Wat Cheung Chum in the town was erected on top of a 16th c. Khmer prang, its interior is still visible. The wiharn houses the statue of a seated Buddha.

Wat Phra That Narai
To the west of the town (near the rice research station on an unmade road, 12 km (7 mi.)) stands the Wat Phra That Narai, an 11th c. temple in Baphuon style. Of particular interest are the beautifully carved lintels which are very well preserved depicting scenes from Brahman mythology (including the gods Vishnu and Krishna).
Phu Phan National Park
Highway 213 in the direction of Kalasin leads to Phu Phan National Park, its spectacular mountains overgrown with monsoon forest.
