Pradong Attractions

The village of the Pradong (longnecks) is an hour and a half's traveling north-west of Mae Hong Son and only a couple of miles from the border with Myanmar. Little was known of this hill tribe until about 50 of them moved over the border into Thailand and made their presence known. It is not clear where they come from but their costume, traditions and habits indicate a northern Burmese origin.

From the age of four girls have golden rings put round their necks. Until they reach the age of 25 these are added at regular intervals and the number can reach 25.

Getting to see this "tourist attraction" is not cheap. The main reason for moving over the border was for the "longnecks" to be able to profit from Thailand's tourism, so as well as having to pay to get into the village it is necessary to pay to take their photograph as well.
