tributaries of Thailand's most important river facilitate intensive farming of the land.

Pathum Thani is a settlement founded by King Taksin (1768-82) for Burmese Mons, whose language is still spoken here today. The town gained its present name (meaning "Lotus Town") as a gesture of thanks to Ramas III, who was always presented with bouquets of lotus flowers by the inhabitants when he visited.
