Nonthaburi Attractions

Nonthaburi

The town of Nonthaburi lies approximately 20 km (13 mi.) north of Bangkok on the banks of the Menam Chao Phraya. Numerous straight and winding watercourses and picturesque Klongs around the town flow towards the river where a considerable part of the town's daily life is played out. A number of attractive temples stand on the banks of the Klongs, which are lined with lush vegetation and houses on stilts.

The most beautiful approach from Bangkok is via the Menam Chao Phraya (boats depart Oriental Pier).

By car: from Bangkok along Samsen Road, which later crosses into Phibul Songkhram Road, along Menam Chao Phraya (approximately 20 km (13 mi.)).

By bus: from Thonburi Bus Station (several times daily).
Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat
Wat Chaloem Phra Kiat, which, when viewed from Nonthaburi, stands a short distance upstream on the other side of the Menam, can be reached either by boat (to be rented in the town) or by regular ferries. The wat was constructed in the first half of the 19th c.; two high encircling walls - the first with battlements, the second characterized by small Chinese towers - surround the site. The richly ornamented main temple and the chedi are remarkable for their pleasing proportions. Only the ruins of two further temples remain.

Pak Kret, Thailand
Pak Kret lies about 8 km (5 mi.) north of Nonthaburi near a bend in the Menam Chao Phraya. The entertaining boat trip from Nonthaburi to this old Mon settlement only takes 20 minutes. The area around Pak Kret and the settlement itself are still inhabited by Mons who, however, have become extensively assimilated by the Thai people. There is a long pottery tradition in Pak Kret. The objects produced, displayed and sold in the workshops along the river, stand out on account of their perfect shapes.
