The village of Ban Renu, 7 km (4 mi.) north-west of That Phanom, is famous for the weaving of silk fabrics, and its main street is lined with shops selling beautiful silk woven in both classic and designer patterns. Wat Phra Renu has a very interesting stepped spire, covered all the way up with expressive, garishly painted reliefs, in a
perceptively proportioned arrangement. The figurative representations of, for instance, Buddha in the traditional poses, or as a child on horseback and riding an elephant, lions, etc. appear sculpted, standing out against the artistic and intricate scrollwork, and indicate a modernity of approach alongside the traditional style.
