Sam Houston National Forest

 
Located north of Houston, Sam Houston National Forest covers over 160,000 acres. It is a popular area for hiking, camping, picnics, fishing, boating and more. There are many miles of multi-use trails. They offer an opportunity to see some of parks wildlife, which includes some endangered species, like the red-cockaded woodpecker. Within the area are the Lone Star Hiking Trail, Double Lake Recreation Area, the Cagle Recreation Area, and Creek Scenic Area.

The park is known for hot summers and mild winters.
