The ranch, established in 1853 by Capt. Richard King, is a National Historic Landmark. It covers 825,000 acres today and is open to the public for tours.

The museum is housed in a restored ice plant and features photos by photographer Toni Frissell. Antique cars, coaches, saddles and other ranch equipment are also on display.
