Huntsville (pop. 35,000) was once home of Sam Houston and is today home of Sam Houston State University. The town is one of the oldest in the state and still features a number of 19th century homes.

Samuel Walker Houston Center
The cultural center pays tribute to the life of Samual Walker Houston. It also offers insight into black life following the Civil War.
Texas Prison Museum
The Texas Prison Museum explores the history and changes of the prison system since 1848. On display are a number of prison related artifacts including an electric chair, and various means of restraints and weapons.
