The town developed as a result of the railroad and agriculture in the area. Today agriculture is still a large part of the town's economy, along with the West Texas State University campus.
The Panhandle Plains Historical Museum features displays related to the cultural and natural history of the area, including exhibits on the Old West and wildlife. The building itself was built in 1933 in a unique Art Deco style.
Exhibits cover petroleum, western heritage, paleontology, textiles, furniture and decorative art, transportation and fine art.
