Parque Nacional das Sete Cidades
The Parque Nacional das Sete Cidades (established 1961) covers and area of 6221 hectares/15,366 acres in the communes of Piripiri and Pirarucura in northern Piauí. It lies 210km/130mi north-east of Teresina (BR 343 to Piripiri, then 12km/7.5mi on BR 222 to the access road to the park).
Flora and fauna
The park ranges in height between 100m/330ft and 300m/1000ft, with a vegetation cover consisting partly of caatinga (arid steppe with low-growing shrubs) and partly of cerrado (bush steppe and savannah). In the gallery forests which grow along watercourses there are Amazonian plants like the buriti palm, but also such species characteristic of north-eastern Brazil as the carnauba palm
