Tepozteco

The Tepozteco ruins are found on a steep rocky height 500 m (1641 ft) above the town itself. Here the Tlahuicas built a 20 m (66 ft)-tall temple-pyramid in honour of Tepoztécatl, their god of the harvest and of pulque (pulque is a fermented drink prepared from the sap of the maguey, an agave plant). The temple can be reached via a steep footpath in about an hour; the view from the top is remarkable. Two flights of steps lead to the pyramid's first section, a third to the second section and the entrance to a small shrine. Within the pyramid are columns with figures and abstract drawings. Calendar symbols are on the walls and the stone floor, as well as symbols for pulque, water, war and blood.

Nearby are more old-Indian ruins.
