Tepoztlán - Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Ex Convento de la Natividad de la Virgen María)
The convent church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has a marvellous doorway, a fine example of the colonial-Plateresque style. The sculpture, executed with consummate skill, has representations of the Virgin Mary between two saints, and medallions with the sun, the moon, planets and the Dominican Cross. Sculptures of angels, which once held inscription tablets, are fixed above the front gable. On the left-hand side of the portico are two chapels with beautiful Gothic groined vaulting, but otherwise in traditional Renaissance style. Remains of frescos have been preserved both in the chapels and in the Posas. The rustic cloister is reached through the single-aisled church.
From the first floor of the loggia on the north-west corner of the convent there is a marvellous view of the surrounding mountains.
The small archaeological museum behind the convent complex exhibits pre-Hispanic finds from the area.
