The state of Tennessee (after the name of a Cherokee village), in the south-eastern United States, extends from the Mississippi plain in the west to the Appalachians. The southern range of the Appalachians is formed by the Great Smoky Mountains, with Clingmans Dome (6644 ft). To the west of this are the Great Appalachian Valley, through which flows the Tennessee River, the flat Cumberland Plateau and the Nashville Basin, surrounded by ranges of low hills.
