Tavira - Castro dos Mouros

Above the town, the Travessa da Fonte leads to the former castle. Only a few sections of the defensive wall remain of the original Roman, later Moorish castle, which was rebuilt after the town was captured by the Portuguese under Dom Dinis I. Today, in a part of the wall, a pretty garden has been laid out; it is privately owned, but can usually be visited. From the garden and from the top of the walls and tower there is a fine view of Tavira and the Rio Gilao.

Igreja Santa Maria do Castelo
Close by the Castro dos Mouros ruins, the Santa Maria do Castelo church is Gothic, having been converted from a mosque. It too had to be completely rebuilt following the earthquake. The church choir holds the tombs of seven knights killed by the Moors in 1242 even though a ceasefire had been agreed.
