Tarazona - Cathedral

Tarazona Cathedral dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, but was much altered in the 16th and 18th centuries. The brick-built tower (1588) is a typical example of Mudéjar architecture. The sculpture and reliefs on the beautiful north doorway were the work of Juan de Talavera. The Capilla de los Calvillo on the north side of the ambulatory contains the sumptuous alabaster tombs of Cardinal Calvillo and his brother, Bishop Pedro.

The beautiful altarpiece was painted by the Sephardic artist Yojanan Levi, a convert to Christianity. The other chapels also have fine retablos and monuments. The large Mudéjar cloister dates from the 16th century.
