Taranto - New Town Città Nuova
From the old town the Ponte Girevole leads over the Canale Navigabile, one of the few places in the Mediterranean where the ebb and flow of the tide can be observed, into the New Town (Città Nuova), with its wide parallel streets. 100m/110yd beyond the bridge is the palm-shaded square known as Villa Garibaldi, on the east side stands the imposing Palazzo degli Uffici (1896).

National Museum
On the north side of the Villa Giribaldi the National Museum (Museo Nazionale), one of the most important museums in southern Italy, houses prehistoric antiquities, a collection of vases (fine decoration, including scenes from mythology), old jewelry and a collection of coins.

To the south of the National Museum, on the Mare Grande, is an avenue of palms, the Lungomare Vittorio Emanuele III, with the modern premises of the Prefecture and the Head Post Office.
