Where to Stay & What to See in Tanzania

Tanzania conjures images of clear, sandy beaches, fresh, young coconuts dotting swaying palm trees, and the golden glow of tropical sunshine. It is a country with a rich history; a German colonial past interwoven with its native African tribal heritage and the strong Arabic influence of the Swahili Coast make Tanzania an interesting place to visit. Tanzania is home to Mt. Kilimanjaro, several national game parks and many unique cities including Moshi, Arusha, Dodoma, Kigoma, Tanga and the more popularly frequented cities of Dar-Es-Salaam and Zanzibar. Expect to choose from a range of accommodation options when visiting each of the cities in Tanzania; these include budget motels, affordable four star hotels, and more upscale five-star hotels.

Dar-Es-Salaam, though it is not the country's capital, is the most populated city in Tanzania and the most vibrant. Due to its location on the border of the Indian Ocean, the weather in Dar-es-Salaam is tropical and humid. The best time to visit the city is between the months of May and September, when the weather is relatively cooler. If you want to explore the attractions in the city, it is a good idea to settle for a hotel located around the extended city centre area so as to minimize travelling time and associated costs. The New Africa Hotel in Dar-Es-Salaam is one that offers consistently good service and boasts a location in the heart of the city. In the city, a popular attraction to visit is the Askari Monument which is dedicated to African soldiers who were triumphant during the First World War. Other attractions not to be missed when in Dar-Es-Salaam include the National Museum and the adjoining Botanical Gardens. In close proximity to the major attractions in the city is the luxury Kilimanjaro Kempinksi Hotel. A five star hotel, Kilimanjaro Kempinski features the largest infinity pool in Dar es Salaam, tranquil spa facilities and several as well as several delectable restaurants. On Ocean Road, which is just outside of the city centre area, visitors can catch a glimpse of the State House. Located in close proximity to the State house, is the globally well known Moevenpick Royal Palm Hotel, a five star hotel situated north east of the city centre.

Those who prefer to stay away from the hustle-bustle of the city, can choose from a number of hotels located in the outer Msasani peninsula, on the oceanfront. Here, visitors can find a popular and well-frequented weekend hangout; 'Oyster Bay', where traditional Tanzanian street-side delicacies can be enjoyed along with a view of the ocean. In the vicinity, is the luxurious Golden Tulip Dar Es Salaam hotel which is located in a quiet and prestigious residential district that is still a relatively short distance away from the city center. Perhaps the jewel in the crown of five-star hotels in Dar-Es-Salaam is the Sea Cliff Hotel which is positioned on a Cliff atop the Indian Ocean. The hotel enjoys the best location in all of Dar Es Salaam, with breathtaking views of the clear, blue Ocean. Adjoining the Sea Cliff Hotel is the Sea Cliff Village, a quaint shopping and dining complex. Some of the best beach hotels in Tanzania can be found in Dar-Es-Salaam. Those who seek a beach-hotel experience can choose from popular establishments such as the White Sands Hotel, or the South Beach Hotel located to the south of the city.

Zanzibar, another tourist hotspot, has a dramatically different feel in comparison. A history-lover's haven, Zanzibar is distinctly historical and drenched in a fusion of Portuguese, British, German and Arab Culture. With its characteristically Swahili architecture and mysteriously narrow streets and alleys, Zanzibar has an intriguing appeal. The island offers a wide range of accommodation options from three star hotels, to more luxurious, five star Zanzibar hotels.

A good place to start exploring the city is at Zanzibar's Stone Town which best reflects the city's heritage and culture. Accommodation establishments in this area are ideally located as they are in close proximity to all of Zanzibar's tourist attractions. A recommended hotel in the Stone Town area is the luxury Serena Inn which promises an unforgettable experience. The stone town features a plethora of ornamental doors intricately carved from wood with Arabic designs and motifs and studded with brass. These 'Zanzibar doors' as they are called, are a hallmark symbol of the city and are often found on local souvenirs. Many of Zanzibar's top rated tourist attractions are concentrated in the Stone Town area. These include the Old Fort, the Mbweni Ruins, the Hamamni Persian Baths, and the exquisite Peoples Palace. Another interesting feature of the Stone Town is the Darajani Market; a lively bazaar where locals trade and sell a variety of local goods.

Zanzibar boasts several luxury hotels. Of these, The Sultan's Palace Hotel is a great five star hotel featuring spacious and opulent rooms decorated in a typically Arabic style and a beautiful setting on the ocean front. Another well reputed hotel is the Zamani Zanzibar Kempinski Tanzania. Zanzibar is an enchanting island; with the richness of its culture and the warm hospitality of its people, it makes for a relaxing and romantic getaway.

Regardless of where you are in Tanzania, whether it is at the foothills of the snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro, walking along the beachfront of the Indian Ocean, or exploring the many attractions in the cities, the friendly smiles of the locals and the breathtaking beauty of one of the most beautiful countries in the world cannot be escaped.
