Hungarian Open Air Museum, Szentendre

An excursion to the open air museum about 3km (2mi.) northwest of Szentendre on the road to Visegrád is highly recommended. It was opened in 1974 and when all the buildings and settlements have been moved from their original sites and rebuilt it should be the largest of its kind in Hungary. The plan is to recreate the rural architecture and lifestyle of ten different settlements with buildings typical of the region, predominantly from the 18th and 19th C. Scattered about the gently rolling landscape the individual "villages" are linked by pathways. Some buildings from West Transdanubia have already been reconstructed as well as a settlement from Upper Tisza region and the Little Hungarian Plain. Together with the houses, which have been reproduced in great detail, the various working quarters, mills, stables, barns, a forge, a weaver's workshop and a village church provide an insight into the everyday life of the rural population. The main attraction of the settlement from the Upper Tisza region, the wooded area on the eastern border of present-day Hungary, is the Reformed Church from the village of Mánd, built in 1787/90. The free-standing clinker-covered 17th C bell tower once belonged to the daughter church in Nebesborzova. On the hill above this settlement is the log-cabin style Greek Orthodox church from the little village of Mándok, which is representative of the basic type of Orthodox church in the North and South Carpathians. The interior of this 18th and 19th C church meets the liturgical requirements of both the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches.
