The Sydney Harbour National Park has been developed in stages since 1975. It takes in the promontories and islands round the entrance to the harbor, parts of North Head, South Head, Dobroyd Head, Grotto Point, Georges Head, Bradleys Head, Nielson Park and Rodd Island, opening up all these areas to the public. The 19th C fortifications and quarantine station can also be visited.

Fort Denison

A kilometer or so off Mrs Macquarie's Point is the little island of Fort Denison, known as Pinchgut, where convicts used to be imprisoned on a diet of bread and water. It was fortified in 1855-7 as a precaution against a possible Russian attack.

Tips
There is only limited public access to Clark Island and Shark Island. Authority for a visit must be obtained in advance at Park Headquarters, Greycliffe House, in Nielson Park, Vaucluse.
