Via Mala (Via Mala Walk & Rongellen) Description
From Thusis the road to Splügen and the San Bernardino pass continues past the end of the Tiefencastel road, crosses the river Nolla, which flows into the Hinterrhein here. The road then enters the Via Mala, a magnificent gorge on the Hinterrhein, enclosed between limestone walls 500 m/1,641ft high; the lowest section of the gorge, the Verlorene Loch ("Lost Hole"), is particularly wild and has been passable only since the construction of a road in 1822. The medieval bridle-path bypassed the gorge, running up from the Nolla valley to the right of the wooded crag of Grapteig; the road follows the windings of the gorge.
