Savognin (1,210m/3,970ft; pop. 1,000) is the primary town in the Oberhalbstein, situated at the mouth of the Val Nandro, which runs down from the southwest to join the Oberhalbstein. The village has three 17th century churches (St Martin's has the finest Italian Baroque ceiling painting), a museum (opening times given) and numbers of attractive
houses. At the upper end of the village, on the left, is a tablet commemorating the residence of the painter Giovanni Segantini (1886-94).
Savognin is also a popular winter sports resort (many ski-lifts; "snow cannon" for producing artificial snow for the ski trails). To the west of the village is Piz Curver (2,972m/9,751ft; six hours, with guide). Chairlifts via Tigignas to Somtgant (2,143m/7,031ft) and via Malmigiucr to Radons.
