The village of San Bernardino (1,607 m/5,273ft) is, the highest place in the Val Mesocco and now a developing holiday and winter sports resort. There are many attractive footpaths through the meadows and woodland of this high valley below Pizzo Uccello (3.5-4 hours). Cableway from the Alpe Fracch (1,630 m/5,348ft) to Confin (1,953 m/6,405ft;
restaurant), ski-lifts to 2,500 m/8,203ft, ice-rink, cross-country skiing.
2km/ 1mi south, on the old road, is the Lago d'Osso (1,646 m/5,401ft), surrounded by forest. From the tunnel exit N 13 continues south over the moorland plateau, passing on the right an artificial lake (1,604 m/5,263ft), curves round to cross the old road and then continues downhill, passing through two tunnels and two galleries. In 11km/7mi it passes (on right) the scattered houses of Pian San Giacomo (1,172 m/3,845ft), from which the old road runs down on the right to Mesocco. N 13 then goes down in wide curves and several hairpins (beautiful views) into the Val Mesocco, which descends in a series of steep steps, with several hydroelectric stations. To the southeast are the twin peaks of Cima di Pian Guarnei (3,015 m/9,892ft) and Piz Corbet (3,026 m/9,928ft). Just before Mesocco N 13 crosses the old road, which traverses the village, while N 13 passes above it (short tunnel) and then descends to the valley floor in a hairpin turn.
