Description
Height of pass: 2,065 m/6,775ft.

The San Bernardino pass is the highest point on the San Bernardino road, a very convenient link between Lake Constance and Ticino. From Thusis onwards it is now mostly of expressway standard, and since the construction of the San Bernardino tunnel (1961-67) it has been the fastest all-year-round route from Lake Constance through eastern Switzerland to northern Italy. From Chur the road follows the Rhine and Hinterrhein valleys to Thusis, and from there takes a new line by way of the famous Via Mala to Splügen (bypass).
