Leave Sarnen on Road 4, which runs south along the east side of the Sarner See to Sachseln (475 m/1,558ft), a prettily situated lakeside village which is popular with summer visitors. In the choir of the church (rebuilt 1672-84; lower part of tower Romanesque) is a glass sarcophagus containing the remains of St Nikolaus von der Flüe (1417-87),
popularly known as "Bruder Klaus", whose conciliatory approach brought about the admission of Fribourg and Solothurn to the Confederation in 1481.
A museum (Dorfstrasse 4), the former house of the Landamman P. Ignaz von Flüe, contains literature and paintings commemorating the mystic and politician Klaus von Flüe. It also has a collection of manuscripts and works by the writer Heinrich Federer (1866-1928).
