The name of this charming little old town, on the River Broye, has its origins with the Roman family Paterni. From the 10th C. the town has been the home of the Burgundian kings. The Benedictine monastery founded by Empress Adelheid, wife of Otto I, in 962 is an outstanding example of Cluny architecture.
