Meiental Attractions
Susten road crosses the gorge of the Meienreuss on a high concrete bridge, from where there is a view of Titlis (3,239 m/10,627ft) ahead. At the Leggistein tunnel on the St Gotthard railroad the road takes a left-hand turn, beyond which one has a view of the Fleckistock (3,420 m/11,221ft) and Stücklistock (3,309 m/10,857ft). Soon after this it goes through a third tunnel and runs high up on the mountainside above the gorge of the Meienreuss, with a panorama of the valley. After a total of 5.5km/3mi the road comes to the group of houses and the church at Meien (1,300 m/4,265ft), beautifully situated at a point where the valley opens out. Beyond this point, in the upper reaches of the Meiental, an area of Alpine pasture enclosed by steep mountain walls, the road continues uphill on a moderate gradient above the left bank of the Meienreuss; from here one can see the jagged peaks of the Wendenhorn and Fünffingerstöcke at the head of the valley. In another 3km/2mi a road goes off on the left and runs down into the valley to the hamlet of Färnigen, on the old bridlepath to the Susten pass.
