Lungern (7,15 m/2,346ft), a popular summer holiday place beautifully situated at the southern end of the lake in a setting of steep wooded hills, with a neo-Gothic church above the village. In 1323 the town of Berne and the three original cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden formed an alliance against the Habsburgs here (commemorative tablet
at the near end of the village, on left). From Lungern-Obsee a cableway runs up west via the intermediate station of Turren (1,531 m/5,023ft) to Schönbüel (2,010 m/6,595ft; skiing), from which there is a path (4km/2mi) to the Brienzer Rothorn and a ski-lift to the Hohe Gumme (2,209 m/7,248ft).
