Bouveret Attractions
4km/2mi from St-Gingolph is Bouveret (394 m/1,293ft), an attractively situated village near the inflow of the Rhône, which creates a wave effect (the "bataillère") reaching far out into the lake.
The road (SP Martigny) now leaves the lake and runs up the broad Rhône valley, keeping close to the foot of the hills. To the left of the road is Port-Valais, with the Hôtel de la Tour, a former 16th C. castle. After passing through Les Evouettes the road comes to Porte-du Secx, a narrow passage (formerly fortified) between the rock face and the river where a road branches off on the left to Villeneuve (8km/5mi) and Montreux. The main road then continues to the large village of Vouvry (384 m/1,260ft, with a power station, and Martigny.
