At Bex, 8km/5mi north of St Maurice is the only working salt mine in Switzerland (17 deg C / 63 deg F). The labyrinth of tunnels and shafts, only part of which is accessible to visitors, stretches for up to 50km/31mi as far as the villages of Villars, Chesières and Arveyes.
