Kristianstad, situated on the Helgeå in southeastern Sweden, was founded by King Christian IV of Denmark in 1614, when Skåne still belonged to Denmark. The town was surrounded by ramparts and bastions, for it was designed as a stronghold to ward off Swedish attacks on Skåne. The layout of the town was the earliest example of Renaissance town-planning in northern Europe, with a rectangular street grid adjusted to the line of the fortifications.
Kristianstad's church is a beautiful Renaissance building, constructed by King Christian IV.
Kristianstad's Trinity Church (1617-28), the largest and finest Renaissance church in northern Europe, has a magnificent organ and carved choir-stalls, for the most part excellently preserved.
In Kristianstad's Östra Storgatan is a Film Museum, housed in the studios in which the first Swedish films were shot. At Västra Storgatan 40 is Cardell House (1760), with a beautifully carved doorway. This was the home of General Cardell, who is said to have had the street closed to traffic so that his afternoon nap should not be disturbed. At Västra Storgatan 39 can be seen a house which was occupied by Charles XII about 1700 and by Stanislaus Leszczynski, the exiled king of Poland, from 1711 to 1714.
In Tivoligatan are a tannery of 1660 and a number of 17th century houses. At the end of the street, on the banks of the river, extends the large Tivoli Park, laid out by a Danish landscape gardener, with a theater in Art Nouveau style (by Axel Anderberg, 1906).
Outside Kristianstad's Norreport, a town gate of 1760, are barracks, once occupied by a regiment which took part in the campaigns against Napoleon. A memorial stone commemorates the battles of Grossbeeren, Dennewitz and Leipzig in 1813. From the Water Tower, 50m/165ft high, there are superb views.
17km/10mi northeast of Kristianstad stands Kongsgård Castle, originally (in medieval times) a monastery and now a hotel and restaurant. There are other castles at Ovesholm (with a beautiful English-style park) and Trolle Ljungby, which was rebuilt about 1660; from the same period dates Råbelöv Castle, on the lake of that name. In the Ivösjö is the island of Ivö (deposits of china clay; porcelain manufactory).
