Kalix Attractions

80km/50mi northeast of Luleå, at the mouth of the Kalixälv, is the town of Kalix (pop. 19,000), which shows a combination of old peasant traditions with the early development of industry. The church (1472) has a late medieval reredos, a fine font and a modern window over the altar (by Pär Andersson). In the local government offices is the Kalix Museum. North of the town, on the Lappträsk road, is Englundsgården, with furniture and furnishings illustrating the way of life of a 19th century farming family. The manor houses of Björknäs, Filipsborg and Grytnäs, at the mouth of the Kalixälv, similarly give a view of the life of the wealthier classes at the end of the 19th century. Some 10km/6mi beyond Kalix is an area extending to the Arctic Circle within which there are restrictions on traffic.
