Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve
The Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve (area 2,200ha/5,400ac is reached on R 612, which runs inland from the coastal town of Park Rynie, passing through Umzinto (15km/9mi west of Scottburgh). In this gentle upland region, declared a nature reserve in 1973, live porcupines, blue wildebeests, antelopes and gazelles, zebras and black-backed jackals. Two artificial lakes attract large numbers of birds. The area is worth visiting for its fascinating vegetation, seen at its best in spring. Good walking. Simple self-catering accommodation.
