Rathausplatz Description
Recent years have seen considerable building changes in the town of St Pölten. The core of the town is the Rathausplatz (the market place in the 15th century); in the center stands a Trinity Column by Andreas Gruber (1782). The square displays a variety of architectural styles, such as the Romanesque vaulted roof and Baroque front of the police station; when renovation work was being carried out on the west front in 1984 a 16th century fresco painting was revealed. Also worth noting are the Mayor's Parlor (Bürgermeisterzimmer), the old council chamber (Ratssaal; remodeled in Baroque style in the 18th century) with 12 sculptured medallions portraying Holy Roman Emperors from Frederick III to Charles VI, the provincial government chamber
