St Lucia Horseback Riding
Several stables offer horseback treks of varying lengths.In Soufrière, Mourne Coubaril Estates lead riding treks around its estate, to the Sulpher Park volcano, and on longer adventures. Similarly, the Ruby Estates, also known as The Still Plantation, offers riding opportunities.In Beausejour on Gros Islet, International Riding Stables offers beach riding and easy treks.At Cas-en-Bas, Trim's Riding Stables offers rides to the Atlantic or Caribbean coasts.On the Atlantic coast, Country Saddles leads riders through plantations, forests and coast.
St Lucia Hiking and Nature Trails
There are a number of trails on St Lucia, two run by the St Lucia National Trust (NT) and others run by the Forestry and Lands Department (F&L). Assume any trail requires a permit before use. Trails may be poorly marked and guides are recommended and sometimes required. Trails include;1) A 3-mile Atlantic trail from the Fregate Islands Nature Reserve to Mandelé (NT). (see Fregate Island)2) The circular Descartiers Rainforest Trail (4 mi) which starts six miles inland from Mahaut on the Atlantic coast highway. This is also the start of a second trail which crosses the island to Fond St Jacques in Soufrière.3) The Gros Piton Nature Trail near Soufrière runs from Fond Gens Libre Community to the Gros Piton Summit (4 hours round trip). The first half of the trail is moderate, but the second half is a strenuous ascent (F&L).4) A circular trail at the Edmund Forest Reserve (F&L) (See Edmund Forest).5) Barre de l'Isle Trail follows the ridge that separates the eastern and western parts of St Lucia. The trail takes about a half day.6) Six miles of trail at the Anse La Liberté camp site south of Canaries created by the National Trust.7) The Union Nature Trail loops through a dry forest near Castries and is an easy walk past a mini zoo, a medicinal herb garden, and an interpretation center.
St Lucia Sightseeing Cruises
While the majority of visitors take vans or taxis around the island, it is possible to see the sights from the perspective of the sea.There are about 10 boats and catamarans run by about six companies who offer such cruises.These are usually full day tours with land excursions in Soufrière, snorkeling at coral reefs in the afternoon, with a return stop at picturesque Marigot Bay.
Tall Ship Brig Unicorn
The Unicorn is a 140 ft replica of a 19th century Brig with 6,000 sq ft of sail. It played a role in the film "Roots" and more recently in the film "Pirates of the Caribbean".Now it plies the west coast of St Lucia taking visitors on day-long excursions departing Castries and putting in for tours at Soufrière, for a swim at Anse Cochon and for a sail through Marigot Bay.The ship also offers Champaign sunset cruises twice weekly.
Endless Summer Cruises
The Endless Summer I & II catamarans, each 56 ft, sail from Castries to Soufrière daily. In Soufrière guests are taken to the volcano and the Diamond Gardens. A buffet lunch is provided. On the return, there is a stop for snorkeling and swimming. Sunset cruises are also available.
Motor Yacht Vigie
The private luxury yacht Vigie offers upscale cruises daily from Castries to Soufrière. In Soufrière guests are taken to the volcano and the Diamond Gardens and Falls. A West Indian lunch is provided. On the return, there is a stop at Anse Cochon to snorkel and swim and then at Marigot Bay. Sunset cruises are also available.
