Description
The Late-Baroque three-aisled former collegiate church, now the cathedral, was reconstructed on the site of the earlier abbey church which had been pulled down. The most notable features are the colorful ceiling-paintings by Christian Wenzinger, the stucco work in the choir by the Gigi brothers, the ceiling-paintings by J. Wannenmacher (1722-80), the wrought-iron choir-stalls by Josef Feichtmayr, with carved scenes from the life of St Benedict. The interior of the cathedral was thoroughly restored and renovated in 1962-67 making the old ceiling paintings in the choir visible again. In the crypt, part of which dates from the 10th C., can be seen the tombs of all the bishops of St Gallen. The monastic treasury is also worth seeing.
