Description
St Augustine Lighthouse has 219 steps leading up to the 165-foot (50m) tower of this working lighthouse. It was built of brick and coquina, a soft shell-rock, in 1874. The old keeper's quarters now contain a museum devoted to nautical artifacts and turn of the century furnishings. Multi-media displays tell the stories of lighthouse keepers and their families. The last one to work here left in 1955 when the beam was automated.
