Spoleto - Cathedral

On the east side of the Bishop's Palace a wide stepped ramp leads down to the long Piazza del Duomo, to the rear of which stands the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with its magnificent facade. Destroyed by Emperor Frederick I (Barbarosa) in 1155, it was rebuilt in 1175. The porch was added in 1491. The upper part of the facade is dominated by a large mosaic showing Christ with Mary and John (1207). The interior was remodeled in the Baroque style in 1638. The choir contains frescoes by Filippo Lippi (1467-69), depicting in particular scenes from the life of Mary. On the left side of the south transept is the tomb of Filippo Lippi (1412-69).
