Arquata del Tronto

From Norcia the road descends with many bends, into the beautiful valley of the Tronto and comes in 20km/12mi to Arquata del Tronto (777m/2,564ft), with a 13th century castle. This is the starting point for the ascent (4.5 hours, with guide) of Monte Vettore (2,476m/8,171ft), the highest peak in the Monti Sibillini which are snow-covered until well into the summer (winter sports). It is possible also to drive to the Forca della Presta (1,540m/5,082ft), 13.5km/8.5mi northwest (first part of road dust-free), climb to the Rifugio Zilioli (2,215m/7,310ft; 3.5 hours) and continue from there to the summit (1 hour).
