Tortosa is identified with the Roman town of Derosa, founded by Scipio Africanus on the ruins of the Iberian settlement of Hibera. It was recovered from the Moors by Ramón Berenguer V in 1148. In 1938 the surrounding area was the scene of the battle of the Ebro, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War, which raged for four months and cost 150,000 lives. The economy of the town is centerd on agriculture (olives, rice, citrus fruits) and also on tourism.
